The author of the Pulitzer-Prize winning book set parts of the story in the county; which helped put the city of Jonesboro on the map. If you’re in the area looking for a bargain check out our Top Shop member Acme Pawn Shop.
“You got to treat people like they’re human, not like they’re an item.”
In July 2000, Acme Pawn was started by Dave Reichert, a pawnbroker and industry expert. Similar to a family shop, they have a close-knit staff who’ve acquired knowledge, experience, and relationships with the local community.
“We differentiate ourselves above other shops with our customer service,” Reichert said. “You got to treat people like they’re human, not like they’re an item.”
Jonesboro is mostly filled with blue-collar workers, but the town has many travelers that pass through.
“We have all types of clients,” Reichert said. “The kind that needs $20 dollars for their gas tanks to the ones that come in and look for high-end watches.”
Pawn shops have a variety of products and clientele form all walks of life. What makes one pawn shop’s inventory differ from another is mainly dependent upon the pawnbroker in charge.
“Our specialty is basically jewelry,” Reichert said. “We have a huge selection of gold pieces, rings, and bracelets.”
The most common customer error, according to Reichert is when they bring in jewelry thinking it’s made with actual gold, when in fact it’s only plated gold – not real gold.
Items that are not jewelry can still be valuable and Reichert is happy to examine them at the shop. Also, he is well aware whenever the economy takes a down turn, and will therefore offer flexibility to accommodate customers in a tight spot. Acme Pawn’s cash loan can range from very high to extremely low, but their average loan is around $80.
“Back when the gas prices went up a few years ago it was hard for some to make it to the next paycheck,” Reichert said. “Everyone got caught with their pants down, and we did a lot of small $20-$30 loans to help people make it through the week.”
Regarding those who have broken or damaged jewelry, Reichert encourages individuals to double check their jewelry’s value.
“Anything made with gold whether it’s broken, smashed, or crushed doesn’t matter, because the gold is worth money just by itself,” Reichert said. “Besides jewelry, other merchandise has to come in pretty much intact.”
The most common customer error, according to Reichert is when individuals bring in jewelry thinking it’s made with actual gold, when in fact it’s only plated gold – not real gold.
For first-timers, he advises them to know how much money they need to borrow beforehand. Also, if you don’t know the value of the item you wish to pawn, research and compare cash offers from other shops to ensure you get the best cash offer. If you’re submitting items on PawnGuru, Reichert says to give more details about the item you want to pawn or sell. For example, instead of simply typing “guitar” type “Ibanez model 490 base guitar,” this will peek the interest of pawn shops.
According to Reichert, Pawn Stars, the hit TV show on History Channel, has put a good light on the industry. It’s important to note that not all pawn shops come across as many unique items like in the show. Still, Pawn Stars helps depict the modern pawn shop of today; clean, well-lit, and a knowledgeable staff. Acme Pawn did recently come across a signed photograph of Elvis Presley, but obtaining unique items is not the focus of the business.
“There are always interactions that are unique,” Reichert said.
